Job Title: NEMT Safety Assistant

Job Description

The NEMT (Non-Emergency Medical Transportation) Safety Assistant is responsible for supporting the overall safety and compliance operations of a non-emergency medical transportation service. This role ensures that vehicles, drivers, and passengers adhere to all safety protocols and regulatory requirements while maintaining a safe and efficient transportation environment for individuals requiring medical appointments and services.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Monitoring

  • Assist in monitoring vehicle operations to ensure compliance with safety regulations, including seatbelt usage, vehicle condition, and proper passenger handling.
  • Observe and report any unsafe driving behaviors or potential safety issues.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections of vehicles to ensure proper functioning and cleanliness.

Compliance and Reporting

  • Ensure that all transportation activities comply with federal, state, and local safety regulations, including those specific to non-emergency medical transportation.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate records of vehicle inspections, safety audits, and driver training.

Driver Support and Training

  • Provide assistance with the development and delivery of safety training programs for drivers, focusing on safe driving practices, passenger handling, and emergency procedures.
  • Assist in training drivers on how to properly secure medical equipment and assist passengers with mobility challenges.

Passenger Assistance

  • Support drivers in ensuring the safe boarding, transport, and disembarkation of passengers, especially those with physical or medical needs.
  • Ensure that all passengers are comfortable, secured, and informed about the safety measures during transit.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Assist in preparing and maintaining emergency kits and equipment in vehicles.
  • Respond to emergencies or incidents as necessary, assisting in coordinating care for passengers and notifying appropriate authorities.

Customer Service

  • Address passenger inquiries related to safety and transportation procedures.
  • Report and resolve customer complaints regarding safety or driver conduct.

Documentation and Communication

  • Maintain clear communication with dispatch and management regarding vehicle safety, incidents, or concerns.
  • Document and report any accidents, safety violations, or incidents involving vehicles or passengers.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional certification or training in safety or transportation management is a plus.
  • Previous experience in transportation, customer service, or healthcare-related roles preferred.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and regulations specific to non-emergency medical transportation is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to lift and assist passengers with mobility challenges when needed.
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow safety procedures accurately.
  • CPR, First Aid, or other emergency certifications are desirable.

Work Environment

  • This position involves both office-based tasks (documentation, training) and fieldwork (vehicle inspections, assisting with passengers).
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required to accommodate transportation schedules, including occasional weekends or evenings.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs when assisting passengers or handling equipment.
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions during vehicle inspections or on-site activities.
